Joshua Howlett

Biography

Joshua Howlett is an British indie folk artist based near Montreux, where he moved as a child. Growing up between British and Swiss culture, he ended up somewhere between the two. After learning to play the guitar, inspired by the musical atmosphere of his family home, he then started to play along to the songs he’d been writing from a young age, slowly developing a unique style and identity that has been shaped and refined throughout his young career. As a result of living surrounded by mountains and forests, Joshua’s music is a melodic mix of folk and indie, influenced by current folk artists such as Ben Howard and Bon Iver, with soulful lyrics about real experiences, hopes, thoughts, anxiety and love. Nature also plays a strong part in his lyrics as well as his image. Howlett’s live performances mix raw emotion with musical diversity, and a strong rapport with the crowd.
In 2017 Joshua became friends with a producer from Big Fam’ Records, and after deciding to record a song for fun together, he impressed them with the rawness and emotion in his work. They soon signed a contract together.
Thereafter they started recording his debut EP, surrounded by experienced live musicians, who immersed themselves in Joshua’s work, improving and furthering the atmosphere of the EP. This process further developed Joshua’s sound and identity, exploiting his relationship with nature and folk roots.
Since then he has released two singles: Slow Dance, a sweet, Christmassy folk song, and Nicer View, a feel-good song.
Coming back to the EP, it is set to be released in early 2019, under the title “Autumnal”, a nod to Howlett’s attachment to atmospheric nature.
